Freshalicious…think fresh, live local, eat healthyReview by Kerry Hills
Cooking is something I have always enjoyed doing, so when I was asked to take a look at this cook book and write about what I think, I was definitely up for the challenge. You see I already eat fresh, and prepare all our baking from scratch and am aware of what I am putting into my body as well as that of the rest of my family….I was up for the challenge and eager to see if I could find some new family favourties. I have to say I am hooked. I now eagerly look through this cookbook looking for new idea’s inspiration as I prepare our weekly meun.
The idea of using fresh fruits, and vegetables in season is not anything new to me. I don’t pull boxes from my freezer, throw it in the oven and claim to have just made a homemade meal, for one, my family wouldn’t eat it…Ok my one daughter might, the picky eater we all have one. I’ve always prepared my food from scratch, my family tends to eat better, and I also know what they are getting and eating.
I love how simple, and quick the recipes are to make in Freshalicious. Truly, it’s the end result, my family is gobbling up dinner and asking for seconds. My pickest eater is eating. My daughter who hated broccoli raw, cooked or whatever way is now inhaling it. I like that if I didn’t have time to marinate the meat first thing in the morning, it still tastes full of flavor after just a few minutes of sitting while I prepare another part of the meal.
What’s been the biggest difference in cooking for me using the Freshalicious Cookbook is that I’m using fresh herbs and what’s in season more than I ever did. The family is enjoying the combinations of the sweetness with the food. The baking has been delicious, treats I don’t feel bad about giving my children , even if they ask for seconds.
I’ve really loved this cookbook, Stacey Fokas’s segments into each season, the blogs about the food, her pictures are beautiful, but most of all her recipes are delicious and dinner time is not a battle to get the kids to eat, they can’t get enough.
I’ve worked my way through the summer recipes and have memorized a few of the family favourites that have now become regular staples that have taken the stress of that rushed dinner time craziness away as I know the kids will eat and I feel good about what I am feeding them.
As the weather gets cooler, I’m looking forward to trying her recipes for the fall and winter and creating new family favourites.
