Well it’s that time of year again!  After drinking and eating our way through the holiday season most of us start to ponder about goals we want to set and achieve for ourselves in the New Year.  While I am not a big fan of calling them “new years resolutions” only because it somehow sets us up for failure and by the time February rolls around these so called “new years resolutions” have become long forgotten.  I prefer to call them “short term goals”.  Much less intimidating.

Since the majority of people will probably be starting off their new year with some sort of gimmick diet I feel it’s important to do a quick recap on the downside of this type of dieting. Most of us already know that “fad diets” do NOT work.  In fact, overly restricted approaches such as extremely high protein and low calorie diets will lead to yo-yo dieting which is a sure way to continue gaining weight as these “fad diets” are not sustainable for long periods of time.

Let’s break it down:

  • 98 percent of people who lose weight through this type of dieting gain it back within a five-year period.
  • Only 2 percent actually keep it off.
  • 90 percent of those who lose weight gain back more weight than they lost.

These are not good statistics.  Don’t get me wrong some of these diets will in fact take the weight off but it’s keeping the weight off that is the true challenge.

Tips on achieving your short term goals:

  • Your weight loss goals have to be a lifestyle change.  I have been preaching this for years.  Slow and steady wins the race.  Write down your short-term goals and make a plan and put it into action.
  • You are what you eat. You must look at food differently than before.  Make conscious choices on what goes in your body as this can make or break your results.
  • Get moving! You don’t have to be at the gym for hours to get results.  You can exercise anywhere, anytime.  No Excuses!
  • Exercise does Not give you permission to eat and drink whatever you want.  Remember it’s a numbers game.  Calories in vs Calories out.
  • Stay off the scale! Especially if the numbers screw with your brain.  We know those numbers can change throughout the day and if that is going to make you throw in the towel then I say get rid of your scale.  Trying on your clothes is the most honest way to gage your results.
  • Visualize what you want! Picture it!  See it!  Believe it!
  • Stay positive.  While I know this sounds very cliché we all have ups and downs however it takes the same amount of energy to be positive as it does to be negative.  So why not try to remain as positive as possible as this will not only help you achieve your short term goals but keep your mind, body and soul healthy. Negativity only breads depression, sickness and disease
  • Get your ZZZ’s.  Sleep is crucial for over all health and well-being.  Women need appox 7-8 hours of sleep per night and Men need approx 6-7 hours of sleep per night.

You don’t need a gimmick or fad diet to help you achieve your goals.  You are stronger than you think.  Of course you will have to make some sacrifices along the way but your hard work and sweat will pay off.

Be the best you this year!!
